Saudi Arabia Updates RoHS Regulation

The Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) published a national RoHS Regulation in early July 2021. According to the new Regulation, the SASO restricts six hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment (EEEs) from January 5, 2022

It means that all EEEs must prove the compliance to the RoHS requirements and ensufre that they do not exceed the chemical restriction levels for the six substances:

  • lead – 0.1%;
  • mercury – 0.1%;
  • cadmium – 0.01%;
  • hexavalent chromium – 0.1%;
  • polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) – 0.1%; and
  • polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) – 0.1%;

This technical regulation is compatible with the EU RoHS Directive except for the four restricted phthalates – DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP that are missing in the Regulation established by SASO.

The Regulation applies to the following categories of products:

  • household appliances
  • information and communication technology equipment

  • monitoring and control equipment

The following products are out of scope:

  • aerospace products
  • large-scale stationary industrial tools
  • large-scale fixed installations

Please, note that for certified products, that have already been put on the market, there is a grace period up to July 9, 2022.
